I've been buying these little boxes from AliExpress for years to use as firewalls and routers. My oldest one is almost 9 years old now! OpenBSD installs just fine. Just a BIOS tweak to always boot up after power is restored.

I'm setting off on a journey to self-host a small Matrix server for my direct relatives and wife to use instead of whatsapp. Can you guys recommend any resources or communities before I start purchasing hardware?

Finally ordered an old PC to use for self-hosting. Can’t wait to get my own cloud services at home, no more of Google annoying me about how I’m like 20 GB over my 15 GB Google Photos free storage. Any suggestions for the software/hardware? Still have to get an extra SSD as the boot drive and a monitor in the meantime.

Thanks!
That feeling when you're cleaning your desk after a 17 day vacation, and decide to rearrange a few things, but it requires you to reroute power, so you just shut down your laptop and flip the power strip off... only to wonder later why your #selfhosted#mastodon server is offline, and then you realize, you also powered off your Mac Mini ESXi host earlier... ...And now we're back up. 🤣
Probably old news to #fosstodon folks, but earlier I was exploring how I might repurpose an old laptop when I came across this awesome list of #selfhosted software:
