Question! Why should local governments use taxpayers’ money to buy proprietary, closed software from a single vendor? And what happens to citizens' data? A solution is to move to free and open source software like and – which is exactly what Schleswig-Holstein is doing: https://blog.documentfoundation.org/blog/2024/04/04/german-state-moving-30000-pcs-to-libreoffice/

folks, I’m looking to ditch Google workspaces due to privacy. I’m using the awesome @protonmail now for mail, calendar and drive plus the bonus of a password manager. I have a few options for photo backups and I’m going to use jitsi for chat and video calls self hosted version. Now what I’m struggling to find is a decent alternative to Google docs, sheets and slides. I really don’t want to use next cloud but does anyone have any suggestions

Does AWS worry about the poor business model of many open source projects? Nalley sighs. [...]

“Inside AWS we have the concept of strategic open source projects. [...] We don’t want to learn that this thing that’s really important is maintained by a guy living in a basement on public assistance. That is not acting in the best interests of our customers.”

AWS exec: 'Our understanding of open source has started to change' • The Register https://www.theregister.com/2023/12/04/david_nalley_interview/

@abesamma gazillion dollar company could just hire the unemployed guy in the basement to work on that project....

bluGill,

@danjac

@abesamma If you depend on an open source project then you want there to be at least two guys working on the project - the bus factor otherwise comes into play.

Element has a new home and will be adopting AGPL license for Synapse, Dendrite and associated server side projects.

"Future code contributors to Synapse will need to sign a contributor license agreement (CLA) based on the Apache Software Foundation’s CLA, giving Element ownership of their contribution so we can use it to help fund Matrix core development in future."

Wow, today marks my 17th anniversary at Distributed Proofreaders (@DProofreaders) -- the largest contributor of to Project Gutenberg! I started out as a proofreader but then quickly got involved in development.

I've been the lead dev and a system admin for most of the past decade, including mundane things like keeping the code up-to-date with new PHP and MySQL versions but also converting the entire site to Unicode.

@anderseknert
The repository is just a few days old. The main value it offers is an improved definition of open source that addresses modern challenges such as open source hijacking. For those who lean towards joining larger crowds, OSI's 1997 guidelines might be a more fitting option:

@JasonGoldman all I see is a lame attempt try and open source wash some proprietary licenses. And why is that page talking about OSI in past tense and like something that doesn’t exist anymore? That seems intentionally misleading.
