I hate the Wayland logo; it's trash.

unfortunately I cannot find alternatives to the gore subreddits :(

Most people are not just happy because OSes that use the linux kernel now account for 3% of desktop Oses, but because presumably 3 percent of desktop users are using an OS that gives them choice and freedom. Which as the article mentioned isn't a trait of ChromeOS, the less popular ChromiumOS on the other hand, I would happily consider Linux as having 7% of desktop users out there if ChromiumOS had that 4%.

Why should the GUI application be a system package? Why shouldn't we have the good permission system that Android has? Why is the distro packaging every piece of software out there a good thing? Why is a couple of packages using more space a big deal to you?

I never can understand those people who are just against the idea of flatpaks. On the other hand, I can see why you'd be against it for the state in which it is right now.

Limitless_screaming,

That's not what I am asking about; fragmentation is another separate problem. What I am asking is why would you be against the idea of flatpak, if you use snaps, then you're with the idea of flatpak (to some extent).

A living proof how typing a full, punctuated sentence and then pressing enter without reading the warning prompt after getting an error from the GUI store can be dangerous. So don't do drugs kids.

A distro and desktop environment recommendation for an old laptop (Read all of it, please.) (kbin.social) en

'sup? So, I am a beginner that has an old Samsung laptop from 2013 with an i3 4005U, a GeForce 710M, 500GB HDD (I will probably upgrade it to an SSD, but not for now.), 4GB 1600 MHz DDR3L RAM (the same for the HDD, will probably upgrade to 8GB some time.). It currently has Windows 10 Home but Linux is probably lighter (right?)...

If you really need a DE then XFCE is your best choice, otherwise try out IceWM; it's the WM used by Antix Linux, so you know it's gonna be light.

Both XFCE and IceWM are know for customization, and both of them aren't the prettiest out of the box.

@Limitless_screaming@kbin.social avatar

WM means Window Manager, it mostly just manages window positions, tiling, decoration, and other Window related things. WMs usually need more configuration than DEs (Desktop Environments), some don't have default panels, widgets, etc. So you have to configure those yourself.

That allows them to be more customizable and lighter, but makes them a little harder to configure.

Nobara Gnome is just a terrible experience. (kbin.social) en

So, after EndeavourOS's GRUB comitted suicide, me being too stupid to understand chroot despite wiki "tutorials" and the community rather trolling & gaslighting me instead of helping I decided to give Nobara a go. Usually I am a Plasma KDE guy, but thought since it's been a long time I try it out, especially since you can have...

Limitless_screaming,
@Limitless_screaming@kbin.social avatar

I don't really understand why you find chrooting hard or what's wrong with the tutorials you found. Can you point out which step of it is difficult. this is the first tutorial I get for Manjaro, is there something missing or left ambiguous?

Limitless_screaming,
@Limitless_screaming@kbin.social avatar

I don't think NixOS is a good option because you'll have to learn a lot more than any other distro. Tumbleweed and EndeavourOS are good , for more graphical tools you could also consider Manjaro and maybe switch to unstable if you want more up-to-date packages, but I am a little biased as you can see.

Limitless_screaming,

The maintainers have slipped up a couple of times, mostly their website's SSL certificate expiring, but it has never affected me really.

people will usually send you to this lovely website but it's been a while since the maintainer's last felony.

If you're concerned about the stability of the AUR then you could simply switch Manjaro to Unstable, so that the repos are synched with Arch.

No matter how much you test, you'll never hit every edge case.

Just let users tell you what problems they faced, put their feedback under the update page on the forum, users open the forum page for the update they're about to install and they see all the problems people faced, it's a very good idea.

Limitless_screaming,
@Limitless_screaming@kbin.social avatar

No:

Unmodifed packages synced from Arch repo are considered stable as they have already been vetted by Archlinux Community.

It considers the AUR, and Manjaro's new tools unstable when they enter the unstable branch. Please read the notes.

I couldn't boot Linux Mint unless I switched from UEFI to Legacy so after 2months of using it I switched to Fedora and then Manjaro.

To this day Kali Linux and Linux Mint cannot boot on my device if it's using UEFI. I tried searching around, asked on forums and nothing came out of that, it's really weird.

I don't even care about the API prices and I used to use the official Reddit mobile app before migrating.

I've been looking for an open source Reddit like platform since the Twitter drama started and people started migrating to Mastodon, but there wasn't much content on them, until now, so I jumped on the band wagon.

Darn, I promoted Lemmy and KBin on Reddit, Voted for mods to continue the protest, encouraged people to request their data from Reddit, and linked my KBin in my bio before completely leaving the platform.

I still haven't gotten the message of honor :(

I am waiting for my data, so I can request it's deletion.
