I'm doing another one of my little surveys, this time to see which parts of using on the desktop are the most problematic, and the various issues people are having.

I'll make a video on these results next week, and depending on the answers, maybe I'll make more videos on specific issues, either to explain these topics, or to see how we could improve.

So, here is the form, feel free to fill it out and share it around, so we have as many answers as possible!

I had a pretty rough start with Linux - but because of using a PreBuilt system with custom motherboard (ACPI bs not working), custom Fans and the like. Well learned my lesson, last PreBuilt I buy. Ended with replacing the Motherboard, the Chassis Fan, the CPU Fan, adding more Fans into the custom built case (which is a sh*tshow as well) and now it runs pretty stable fortunately.

Other than that, everything else was absolutely doable with a tiny bit of research, but here as well, because of my own choices to run Arch. And I'm loving my setup now as is.
What was (and today still even is), is the Arch Wiki ofc and some YouTubers doing an excellent job in showing, describing and explaining how it works on Linux (ofc you, DistroTube and many others).

I still have W11 on a secondary SSD, just in case of, for my peace of mind (made the switch about 2.5 months ago), but if I find myself not using it for months, I think I'll get rid of it eventually.

If you’re looking for app recommendations, you probably generally land in the usual « LibreOffice / GIMP » space.

But what about other apps, like Obsidian, Notion, VS Code, Teams or Slack?

Well, I have a few recommendations for these as well, if you want to go all open source (and they all run on , of course):

Since a lot of people seemed to enjoy the video where I talked about the software I use, here is a video with all the stuff I run on my , and the things that I still need to set up on it:

A lot of developers reports they use as their main professional OS (only 47% in 2022 though), so let’s see why a Linux distribution is the best choice for most developers:

I use Xubuntu. Probably migrating to Debian 12 with XFCE soon.

I (not a developer) currently run Debian 12 with Xfce. It runs like a top!

It's time for another and news video!

In this one, we have some nasty flaws in AMD and Intel CPUs that require performance-reducing mitigation patches (potentially brutal for Intel especially).

We also have some nice features for Plasma 6 and 45, and an alliance between SUSE and Oracle to offer RHEL source code to the community:

I had already taken a superficial look at macOS, a year ago, but now, I spent 30 days with it, as my main OS, on an M1 MacBook Pro.

And boy am I glad this is over, and glad to be back on !

Here are my conclusions about the hardware, the software, and the general experience of using a Mac as a Linux user:

Even though I absolutely love , sometimes I get tired of encountering the same issues over and over again, and of the "it's 99% there" situation.

Let me know if you agree with these issues or not, and if you have others that personally bother you.

(Also, 2nd video out of 4 that isn't edited by me, previous feedback has been incorporated partially, let me know what you thought!)

@thelinuxEXP Part of that “99%” there is also due to Linux-hostile policies and practices of companies and organizations. Stupid stuff like telling me I cannot use the features of a website because my operating system isn’t Windows or macOS is one I’ve encountered just recently.

I’m currently outside having a beer, so I don’t quite have time to write a summary of today’s and video, so you’ll have to watch the video:

In this week’s and News video, we have the new App Store that will demote deb packages, we have the alpha of 45, and proposing to add telemetry in a future release.

Let’s take a look:
