RTR#30 Monthly Recap and Planned Next Steps (kbin.social) en

Today, I added a box of related/random collections - I must admit that the ones you created are fantastic. Collection names can be repeated since they are user-assigned. I added the option to mark a collection as official - those with the highest number of followers in a given topic and with a specific name can be marked and...

The pace at which you have been improving things and adding new features have been impressive this past month! Thank you and I hope you are taking some breaks in between for yourself!

/kbin RTR#18 Platform optimization and internal API testing (kbin.social) en

Today marks the eighteenth day since returning to the project. During this time, I've managed to address critical areas that required optimization. This will be noticeable in the page loading speed and overall user experience. It's about halfway through my intended optimization efforts, but for now, I'm satisfied with the...

kbin RTR#14 Code Refactoring, preparation for kbin.social update (kbin.social) en

Today, I started preparations for a more extensive code refactoring. The changes won't be immediately visible, but they will significantly impact the future development of the project. This includes improving the functioning of federation, with a particular focus on collaborative remote content moderation. This will likely take...

/kbin Road to Release devlog series (kbin.social) en

From today, I'm starting a small series of daily devlogs where I'll be describing the changes being implemented before the official release of the first version of /kbin. As I mentioned earlier, I had some minor turbulence in my private life from which I'm slowly emerging. I have partially stabilized my life situation in various...

The when is less important than the what: an epidemic scale as an alternative to the WHO's Public Health Emergency of International Concern (thelancet.com) en

WHO declared the end of the Public Health Emergency of International Concern (PHEIC) for COVID-19 on May 5, 2023, and for mpox (formerly known as monkeypox) on May 11, 2023. Throughout its use, the meaning of the term PHEIC has been muddled. We call for a new, objective epidemic scale that better communicates the potential...

Firefox for Android should have an open ecosystem of extensions by the end of the year. (blog.mozilla.org) en

In the coming months Mozilla will launch support for an open ecosystem of extensions on Firefox for Android on addons.mozilla.org (AMO). We’ll announce a definite launch date in early September, but it’s safe to expect a roll-out before the year’s end.

This is great! Hope they bring it to iOS as well. This could really help to convince a lot of people to switch to Firefox.

Threads vs microblogs?

Does anyone have any advice on whether to use or when you're looking to say, start a discussion about a topic on ? Is there an etiquette for what option is best? Or do people just pick depending on their mood (having a Twitter vs a Reddit sort of a day)?

LollerCorleone,
@LollerCorleone@kbin.social avatar

@NudelnAlDente If you just want to put something out there, microblog is a good option. If you want a discussion, starting a thread is the better choice.

That is a neatly designed survey!

Instead of deleting your Reddit account, consider using chatgpt to make comments instead (kbin.fedi.cr)

And make sure not to click on any links. If enough people use chatgpt or other LLM's to generate comments that are wordy but clearly just filler, it'll give advertisers pause and tank the value of the site as training data. Reddit's response will probably be to start banning users it thinks are doing this but normal users will...

That is too much effort for a site I don't really care about.

LollerCorleone,
@LollerCorleone@kbin.social avatar

Yes, that will show you all the communities/magazines that your instance has already discovered and have started federating with. But if it is a community that hasn't been discovered by your instance yet, you will need to search with the link for it to start federating. And once even a single user from an instance does that, the community will be visible to everyone else as well.

LollerCorleone,
@LollerCorleone@kbin.social avatar

You don't need to do that if that community is already federating with your instance. If its not, it might take a little while for the federation to actually start after you make the search (based on the server infrastructure of your instance and the remaining queue). Try searching again after a bit and it should be there. These quriks should be solved as instances become more stable, and Lemmy/kbin gets further developed.

Unless its something you are desperately trying to find, nothing disappears from the internet.

LollerCorleone,
@LollerCorleone@kbin.social avatar

I will do that once I figure out how exactly to do it. I am still learning. For now I have used the instances that I prefer.

LollerCorleone,
@LollerCorleone@kbin.social avatar

I am glad it works. Teddit and Libreddit devs seem to be working on switching from API to web scraping. I hope they are successful. Otherwise, old reddit is the only choice.

LollerCorleone,
@LollerCorleone@kbin.social avatar

I have updated both the scripts. They will now redirect to a random instance than relying on just one. The script will also a button to the bottom right of the instances which will allow the user to reload the page they are on in a different instance (in case the one which was loaded has some issue).

LollerCorleone,
@LollerCorleone@kbin.social avatar

Randomization added. Thanks for the suggestion!

LollerCorleone,
@LollerCorleone@kbin.social avatar

Yep! Btw, I have updated the script and added randomized instances than relying on a single one. Do let me know if you face any issues. At least till teddit and libreddit works.

LollerCorleone,
@LollerCorleone@kbin.social avatar

Yeah. This was also a learning exercise for me. Libreddit and Teddit devs seem to be thinking of switching to web scraping if nothing else works. Let's see how that goes.

LollerCorleone,
@LollerCorleone@kbin.social avatar

I tried a while ago, but it wasn't working as intended for me.

Violentmonkey, an opensource alternative for Tampermonkey (kbin.social) en

Since Greasemonkey is no longer being updated and /kbinStyles has been thriving, with people creating a lot of userscript for added functionality, I thought I should introduce Violentmonkey here. It is a really good opensource alternative for Tampermonkey and works well....

LollerCorleone,
@LollerCorleone@kbin.social avatar

If you are talking about tampermonkey, I am sure it is a good addon. But it is no longer opensource. This post was meant for people who prefer opensource over proprietary as much as possible.

When the Twitter migration happened, a lot of folks got overenthusiastic about the idea of the fediverse and started setting up their own Mastodon instances, despite having little to no experience with selfhosting before.

A lot of such instances have since shut down as they realised the amount of efforts that actually needs into hosting such a platform, especially instances with open registrations. However, a large number of them did survive and are now thriving.

Has the growth rate slowed? Sure, just like it is expected happen after a sudden influx. But it is false to say that Mastodon growth has stalled. Instead, the phrase I would use is 'stabilized'. Mastodon growth has stabilized into a healthy level as user growth is now happening more organically. Some stats below:

12,808,214 accounts +217,864 in the last week

Stats on most active instances:

By number of users:

By number of posts:
https://i.postimg.cc/cCWbM0y1/Screenshot-20230625-121509-Firefox.jpg

How can anyone look at these numbers and say that the growth has stalled?
