Hopes Dashed As LK-99 Confirmed Not To Be A Room-Temperature Superconductor (iflscience.com) en

After a few intense weeks of speculation and drama, more and more labs have been able to recreate LK-99, also known as modified lead-apatite. The material was touted as the first-ever room-temperature ambient pressure superconductor, a claim that was met with healthy skepticism and excitement. After all, extraordinary claims...

That sounds like there's maybe variables not taken into consideration.

Tbh that's the hopium speaking but I've taken a big dose of it.

I get what you're saying but I'm not sure it really works that way on the fediverse... Could be convinced either way, though.

I'm someone that would be Republican if the GOP hadn't lost their fucking minds. You could call me a conservative.

Presumably you can already tell what I think. Those fucking idiots, I hope the contingent of that party dies off quickly enough that reasonable conservatives can salvage what's left.

You're not wrong. And it's worse for the people who think like I do. We've been labeled "neoliberals", a term I'm not exactly a fan of and labeled centrists. In fact we're quite the opposite. We're so conservative it starts to look liberal again, bordering on anarchocapitalism (which is more where I find myself).

You, my friend, have learned the value of management infrastructure. Completely air-gapped, separate network, etc

How come there is very little Kbin SEO for individual posts? Also, what are tags/badges? (kbin.social) en

Maybe someone smarter than me can explain things, but It's been about a month since I've started the process of creating a magazine to support the reddit/discord community I've helped mod for the past 4 years... but I've noticed that zero posts show up in google search....

The search engines are going to have to deal with that. However you can provide context in the instance in the form of a canonical URL, to tell a search engine where content originated.

A distro and desktop environment recommendation for an old laptop (Read all of it, please.) (kbin.social) en

'sup? So, I am a beginner that has an old Samsung laptop from 2013 with an i3 4005U, a GeForce 710M, 500GB HDD (I will probably upgrade it to an SSD, but not for now.), 4GB 1600 MHz DDR3L RAM (the same for the HDD, will probably upgrade to 8GB some time.). It currently has Windows 10 Home but Linux is probably lighter (right?)...

As far as a Desktop Environment goes take a look at XFCE. It's gtk based so will run all the Gnome style apps and look pretty, it's super lightweight, and infinitely customizable.

If you're keen on an Ubuntu flavor, the Xubuntu comes with it bundled. You can get it on any other distro, too, though.

My recommendation is just don't buy into one distro too much. Play around with a few, shit play around with 10. Figure out your desktop environment, your terminal, install your files onto a separate partition you can use from anything.

The big changes between distributions don't really affect every day consumers. They can all run Gnome, KDE, XFCE, bash, fish... They can all run all the software. A few, like your Debian or Fedora based might have a couple better drivers, but even then they'll all be pretty comparable. They all have package managers that are usually some flavor of apt, yum, or Flatpak. If you want to use terminal utilities they all come with coreutils. Every one is good to learn to code.

Play with what you want, abandon it, and play with something else.

Advice from someone who's been daily driving a Linux box since 1998 and who uses it every day professionally.

Oh that's totally fair. I guess my point is if you're just looking for something that'll work then that's just about any of them. I'd pick the one with the most results on StackOverflow because it's most likely to have any issues resolved. And even then, to be honest, that's just a habit from 25 years ago when issues were a thing, these days pretty much everything just works.

If you're asking about distro recommendations I guess I expect a distro hopper.

Ngl I miss all the niche communities from reddit that actually had content. Like there's nothing for The West Wing or The Wire on the lemmybin. Last hype shit for Starfield on the largest Starfield Magazine was like 3 days ago.

Not that I really need or get that much out of that content but it's shit I like to talk about. And sure I can create the communities or post the content, but it's like yelling into an abyss right now.

That'll change as more people join, of course, it's just a part I miss.

Could you describe what "webrings" were?

Oh god I feel old

elscallr,
@elscallr@kbin.social avatar

If that's what the people in that magazine want to see they're not being trolled at all. Now if that shit leaks out, then yeah I'm 100% with you.

elscallr,
@elscallr@kbin.social avatar

Sure, and if the instance operators decide that I respect it. Just saying it's not up to me, or you, or the person I replied to.

Actually not trying to be a dick or a pedant, but is there a problem with just the git command? I've been using it since git existed so I don't really have anything to compare it to. The idea of finding another client seems a bit strange to me.

elscallr,
@elscallr@kbin.social avatar

I guess I can see that. It's not common I need to do so, but a few times I've went spelunking with git log [file] and git diff sha..sha [file] and I could see that being useful presented graphically.

@elscallr@kbin.social avatar

That's interesting, though. I haven't used Tildes but I got real used to rif's interface and this is taking some getting used to.
