Reddit Activity Plummeted After The Protests - by Adam Bumas (garbageday.email) en

Last month marked the official end of the Reddit protests. Any subreddit that had changed its rules or gone dark — or forced its users to post exclusively about John Oliver — has now gone back to normal. On the surface, it seems like a complete victory for Reddit, but things aren’t so simple when a major element of that...

ryan,

I would have a slightly different takeaway from this - it's the vocal users, the ones that commented and posted and were active contributors, who were pissed off and left. I would wager a good amount of lurkers who idly browse memes and upvote content have remained.

In the short term, Reddit still ends up with ad impressions, no change, there are a ton of lurkers. But in the long term, this becomes a bit of a death spiral - less new content for the lurkers and they're more likely to be peeled off onto a more active platform with fresher memes, and the remaining contributors have less people to talk to and so they, too, are peeled off elsewhere.

This also means, if Reddit wanted to curate and sell their text data for AI training, that there's suddenly much less of that coming in. Whoops.

I need to go and visit some more standing stones. Was looking through photos for but I can't find any new ones to play with, which just isn't acceptable. This is my favourite.

@Arotrios had a really good post about some of the stuff you can do with kbin to follow other communities or even entire instances across the fediverse.

HandsHurtLoL,

Extremely well said, and I would repost you to the bestof magazine if I didn't think bestof communities were lame.

As I keep reading about all of this unfolding, a phrase that keeps rattling around in my brain: oppositional defiance disorder.

I am not a doctor or psychiatrist so I am not being too serious by bringing it up, but I am facetiously curious about who has the worst ODD among all the players of this drama.

Is it Steve Huffman and his refusal to back down? Is it the rexxitors who jumped ship on June 12? Is it the redditors who stayed to troll Huffman and his edicts? Or is it the redditors who stayed and are crafting a bespoke cesspool in snoo's carapace?

What are your thoughts, @arotrios ?

ERP program for a small business (kbin.social) en

I work at a small business ~20 people and we're looking for a self hosted solution to our resource planning software. We have a huge variety of job scopes, skillsets, equipment, and technicians. The owners have a hard requirement for self hosting due to the variety of clients we work for who want to know their data stays within...

This site gives an idea of how Lemmy & kbin are growing.

const_void,

Amazing! Long live the fediverse. Fuck Reddit!

NextGenHen,

Quite enjoying the Kbin experience after 11 years of reddit. I thought it would be harder to switch.

fishos,

Goodnight, sweet prince.

TheTheMeet,

im boosting this as well..

do i need to scroll to the end of the page just to reply a post?

andemira,

Same for me. I feel like the reason kbin in particular feels so much like coming back to a long lost home is because it appeals to the old guard of reddit, people with 10+ year accounts who really just wanted an aggregated collection of forums for niche interests. Reddit kept getting shittier as that format got diluted and they tried to push it towards being mainstream social media.

GataZapata,

Funnily enough, boost for reddit is the last one holding out and closes after today. I was really confused by your title hahah

rickywithanm,

Hell yeah

10 years of rif down the drain. Keen to learn about the fediverse. It’s very overwhelming.

    Kittengineer,

Anyone coming from Apollo, I highly recommend wefwef. It’s impressively close given how short it’s been in development.

    Also fuck spez

    avyrla,

Sup fellow Lemmings. Hope you enjoy your stay.

    delta,

    FUCK /U/SPEZ

    delta,

Thanks for the recommendation! There’s so many apps in the works, I love it. I have a whole folder lol. I’ve found Thunder and Mlem to be the most overall functional so far but I’m definitely gonna check out wefwef.

I encourage everyone to go see what’s out there as far as third party apps. Fuck it, try them all!

edit: wow you weren’t kidding! it really feels extremely similar to apollo while managing to be a web app?? pretty impressive. although i’d prefer a native version…

    philoneous,

    fuck u/spez!
