The 48th Polish Film Festival in Gdynia — Cineaste Magazine write up (cineaste.com) en

Here's an excerpt >Although it could not have been planned that way, the forty-eighth Polish Film Festival will stand as one of the last cultural monuments of the outgoing far-right government that has ruled over the country since 2015. Along with socially intolerant and ultra-Catholic anti-immigration and anti-abortion...

Psychedelic Furs - Love My Way (Live, Pasadena 1983) (m.youtube.com) en

The Psychedelic Furs recorded this strangely mesmerizing live version of Love My Way at Perkins Palace in Pasadena, US in 1983, for a tv music programme. It has a slower tempo than the album version from Forever Now (1982), yet the timing is very even and Richard Butler is pitch perfect....

RTR#30 Monthly Recap and Planned Next Steps (kbin.social) en

Today, I added a box of related/random collections - I must admit that the ones you created are fantastic. Collection names can be repeated since they are user-assigned. I added the option to mark a collection as official - those with the highest number of followers in a given topic and with a specific name can be marked and...

Thank you, these improvements are great!! I am really glad you are prioritizing stability. Also, I don't want you to be overworked. I feel like you understand the potential of the fediverse, and how best to create something good and lasting.

It just seems to be working better in general, and it feels like I am seeing more content and maybe even more engagement.

If I have to pick some, improved moderation and collections are my favourite improvements. I'm already finding collections useful (both mine and other people's). I like how we can see crossposts too.

I wasn't able to work out how the * button worked (and now it's gone for me on mobile), but that's okay.

Thanks for sharing your site with us, and all the work you do. It's really exciting seeing it develop!

@livus@kbin.social avatar

@scrubbles Kbin now has an automated process so if a community owner has been absent for a month, another person can just take over, and either revive it or delete it. Abandoned communities are also listed as abandoned. Would be really good if Lemmy could have something similar!

!movies started great and has over 4,000 subscribers, but suffered from an absent mod for a long time. Recently I made myself its owner and am slowly bringing it back to life.

That's why I was a little bemused at first when @Blaze (who I somehow mistook for a bot!) started crossposting all our new posts, but I actually don't think it's a problem. Interestingly, I've checked the list of upvoters for those crossposted articles across the two communities and it's not the same people in each. And only 21 people from my instance subscribe to moviesandtv.

I think it's good for mods to have these conversations. As the fediverse develops and discovery gets better (e.g. publicly shareable multi-feeds) things will start to grow or disappear organically and different communities will have different rules and flavours.

To take the example of movies again, already !movies has a somewhat different flavour than !moviesandtv which includes television.

Fragmentation can be cleaned up, but I also think decentralization is one of the important strengths of the fediverse, and we should be patient with small communities.

RTR#29 Another boring update: Categories and bug fixes (kbin.social) en

Today, I wanted to introduce you to Categories - a new feature that is essentially a multi-mags view. A new tab will appear in the user panel where you can create categories (public or private) and then add magazines to them (local or remote). In the magazine listing, there will be another tab that will list public categories...

livus,
@livus@kbin.social avatar

@ernest I just made one! Thank you, this is super super cool. Least boring update ever!

Small issue: I can't get it to let me add @world. It just adds more and more options that end in .world and if I manually type it, it won't add. Might be because I'm on mobile.

livus,
@livus@kbin.social avatar

I'm beginning to feel slightly weirded out that every single post I make to !movies gets reposted here.

Am I being followed by a bot?

livus,
@livus@kbin.social avatar

@Blaze Thanks for the reply. Nice to know you're a human!

You've actually reposted all my posts to movies in the last few days, including an obscure one, so I was really beginning to wonder!

livus,
@livus@kbin.social avatar

@Blaze Afterthought: I do have a favour to ask, please can you upvote my posts if you like them?

One of the reasons I thought you were a bot was because you weren't interacting with me at all over there.

livus,
@livus@kbin.social avatar

@Blaze Thanks!! Cinephiles unite!

livus,
@livus@kbin.social avatar

@Blaze thanks for the invite, that's an interesting idea - but I don't know if federation currently allows us to cross-moderate between Lemmy and Kbin yet?

We should probably decide which community to keep at some point

https://lemm.ee/c/moviesandtv is obviously the bigger/main community on the threadiverse so definitely it needs to be kept!!!

Also everyone already migrated here once after the old instance shut.

Kbin is a relatively small instance, but I'm still committed to helping it maintain some basic communities because I think it's an important aspect as it grows. So I'm thinking for now, keep little !movies going too, maybe lean into theory/art/history type stuff over there a bit more.

Back when I was on reddit I used to enjoy both the big movies sub and the much smaller ones like flicks and truefilm, and now that Kbin has multi-communities that seems promising in terms of access.

livus,
@livus@kbin.social avatar

@HandsHurtLoL wait, are mods not meant to comment? I'm doing it wrong.

Edit: nvm, you're modding politics, I can see why you'd need to remain neutral for that.

livus,
@livus@kbin.social avatar

Absolutely love it here. Kbin is awesome, and I love the fediverse. I'm way more about content creation here than I was on reddit because I want to be part of this. @ernest keeps making it better too.

I love interacting with all the instances and also I love the access to Mastodon content. I was never on Twitter or Mastodon before but now I follow these cool people I found from my community microblogs.

I never run out of internet, the fediverse has all I need. Yet, I feel more productive irl than I used to be.

A search result took me to reddit last week and was shocked by how many bots, shills, and just how much general anger and fighting is over there. Also they seem to have more dumb or trolling people than I remember.

That reddit blackout did me a huge favour. Never going back. The future is federated.

livus,
@livus@kbin.social avatar

That was my threshold too but in reality I just stopped.

livus,
@livus@kbin.social avatar

I still comment a fair bit just from sorting by all > new. But yeah we're still in the early days comment-wise. The magazine I created almost never gets any comments or posts but there are a few lurkers who upvote and it slowly grows.

I've recently taken on a couple that were stagnating due to absentee mods and it's going slowly, but I still think it's important for kbin to have our own chill communities on these topics rather than outsourcing it all to the lemmys.

You must be doing something right, because I'm pretty sure I noticed your mag in my feed the other day which made me realise it's active. (I contributed an article but unfortunately it's on NZ politics because that's the only one I follow)!

livus,
@livus@kbin.social avatar

Maybe move to an instance that doesn't federate with them? That way you just don't see it.

livus,
@livus@kbin.social avatar

@kwomp it might depend on the instance that hosts the community and/or you?

Votes are not treated the same way across the fediverse and we're not actually all seeing the same vote scores.

For example, beehaw doesn't have downvotes, full stop. Kbin has downvotes but doesn't federate them - if you downvote me I won't see it, and vice versa.

livus,
@livus@kbin.social avatar

@testing yeah I like that too. Sometimes when I'm looking for a community I accidentally use the general search instead of the magazine search and end up down all these rabbit holes!

How social media is reviving unwritten languages in Bhutan (aninews.in) en

The Kingdom of Bhutan, a land steeped in rich cultural heritage and linguistic diversity, lies in the heart...

livus,
@livus@kbin.social avatar

Thanks @ernest this is wonderful!!

livus,
@livus@kbin.social avatar

Me too. One day maybe we can have both options, but for now, this is great.

Must be weird for you having so many people requesting things all the time. I don't know how I would feel if an avalanche of people asked me to change my work!

livus,
@livus@kbin.social avatar

Ah that's so interesting. Naked mole rats have many amazing qualities I would like to possess...

Finally got access to Tildes today... Seems unimpressive (kbin.social) en

I got an invite code and so spent a bit of time browsing around because I'd heard good things about it. But I was surprised at how basic and non-diverse it all is. The forums are preset and are very generic. The conversations are definitely better than Reddit, but no better or worse than the ones I've had with people on Fedi....

livus,
@livus@kbin.social avatar

I really like the quality of the conversation over there but felt a little bit uneasy at the way the structure was influencing their community's culture.

The whole thing is owned/controlled by this one guy Deimos, everyone there is a mod but he is the only admin. He sort of gardens it, as in he deletes whole conversations if he doesn't like the direction they are taking the community in. Understandably there was a lot of reference to "Deimos says" and "Deimos thinks" when they discussed the reddit influx.

Be wary of spiteful Reddit users (kbin.social) en

In the past week and a half, I've noticed Reddit behaviors starting to try and poison all of the places that people are taking refuge in to get away from the toxicity, myself included. They've started to DDoS Lemmy for a while, which is a Reddit thing to do and what they're notorious of doing whenever they feel they don't like...

livus,
@livus@kbin.social avatar

They actually seem to have moved off lemmy and onto kbin (where we are right now)

livus,
@livus@kbin.social avatar

You are using Kbin, which means you can block not just magazines/communities, but instances, and individual users.

This. I really think they haven't got their head around what kbin is, yet.

livus,
@livus@kbin.social avatar

I never actually saw it on reddit but am subscribed here.

livus,
@livus@kbin.social avatar

First up, verify Rampart.

Is it my imagination or has that place really jumped the shark?

That screenshot makes it look like a boring version of neopets where there is only one species (Snoo). I hadn't noticed how childish it was getting because I used RIF.

livus,
@livus@kbin.social avatar

Yeah I like it too, must check if I can still log in. What neopets do you own?

livus,
@livus@kbin.social avatar

I'm talking to you from kbin.social right now.

It's like a lemmy but with some different features. Like, I can read and interact with mastodon users a bit from here as well.

Scent dogs can detect COVID-19 more rapidly and accurately than current tests, finds review study (medicalxpress.com) en

Scent dogs may represent a cheaper, faster and more effective way to detect COVID-19, and could be a key tool in future pandemics, a new review of recent research suggests. The review, published in the Journal of Osteopathic Medicine, found that scent dogs are as effective, or even more effective, than conventional COVID-19...

Makes sense. I wonder if Apopo's tuberculosis-sniffing Giant Pouched Rats would be good at it as well.

I think the rush to recreate communities is a bad idea. (kbin.social) en

If you recall reddits growth many of their communities evolved as offshoots of a single generic community. This made it easier for people to see discussions they normally would not get involved in, and once the posts in a similar category reached critical mass it moved to a sub Reddit....

livus,
@livus@kbin.social avatar

I think it's more likely @NekoKamiGuru responded in the wrong place. The above doesn't really make sense as a reply to their other comment.

livus,
@livus@kbin.social avatar

I don't get why you'd think @Temperche is being disingenuous.

livus,
@livus@kbin.social avatar

Okay, but maybe don't jump straight to calling someone a liar just because they don't provide proof in their casual comment?

You didn't provide proof in your comment about Reddit losing VC funding due to interest rates, but that doesn't mean you're trying to mislead us.

livus,
@livus@kbin.social avatar

Sorry for the confusion, I think that's what disingenuous normally means.

Maybe you meant something else though.

livus,
@livus@kbin.social avatar

I'm willing to believe you, but when I googled I got the definition in my link, which is what I thought it meant.

Can you maybe tell me what you meant so next time I see someone call someone that, I can bear in mind it has more than one meaning?

livus,
@livus@kbin.social avatar

Dishonest and insincere speech isn't lying?

Okay I don't really see the distinction, but I don't think @Temperche is being dishonest or insincere either.

Anyway, thanks for explaining.

livus,
@livus@kbin.social avatar

Kbin already has this covered. We can pay monthly to keep servers running via

Patreon and Liberapay.

@Ernest has transferred the existing Buy Me A Coffee money over to the server fund and from this point on we really can buy him a beer via Buy Me A Coffee which is cool!

livus,
@livus@kbin.social avatar

I'm not Ernest but my guess is it gives us greater flexibility?

Like, some of us are already active on one or the other of those platforms, plus between them there are lots of different options for amount. I'd never heard of Liberapay but I like how it's a non-profit.

livus,
@livus@kbin.social avatar

I think @neshient is likely to be right. IIRC something like 800 people have been donating via Buy Me A Coffee.

livus,
@livus@kbin.social avatar

Yes, Reddit moving another step closer to Dead-Internet Theory.

There were already bots talking to bots on there. This is about to get worse. I don't think most people realised how many bots BotDefense was finding and neutralizing.

livus,
@livus@kbin.social avatar

Friendster was the OG! There was also Petster for people who were disappointed that Friendster didn't allow profiles of pets.

livus,
@livus@kbin.social avatar

In January of 2023, we added an incredible 10,070 bots to our ban list

Holy crap. Reddit really is about to be overrun by bots and AI talking amongst themselves.

I hope some of the bot defense team come to the fediverse. They are cool people.
