Social acceptability of psilocybin-assisted therapy for existential distress at the end of life: A population-based survey
Plourde et al., 2024

"The social acceptability of psilocybin-assisted therapy for existential distress at the end of life is rather high in Canada. These findings may contribute to efforts to mobilise resources and improve access to this emerging therapy in palliative and end of life care settings."

American physicist and chemist Katharine Burr Blodgett was born in 1898.

She was the inventor of a technique for making non-reflecting "invisible" glass, a material used in virtually all camera lenses & many other optical devices. She was also responsible for developing an instrument that can measure film thicknesses to within a few angstroms. She did research on methods of removing ice from airplane wings. She is also credited with the development of a new type of smoke screen.

Mars experiences moments where its moons cast shadows on its surface. But "eclipses" on the Red Planet are very different from those on Earth, and the footage is surreal: More from Science Alert: https://flip.it/zWSO8l

Nearly two years ago, the underwater Hunga volcano in the South Pacific experienced an eruption so strong its caldera collapsed completely. A small team of scientists has partly mapped the magmatic system under the volcano from both before and after the eruption. Phys.org has more on what they found: https://flip.it/nhwv-e

Wow this is bad. Some Italian researchers decided there wasn't enough anti-right-to-repair hardware in the world already, and developed a way to physically profile and recognize individual battery cells that can be combined with classic DRM technologies to prevent non-OEM battery cells from working inside a device, even if the classic DRM portion is circumvented. Whyyyyyy?!

One of the world’s longest-running experiments has been going for 144 years!

In 1879, botanist William Beal wanted to study how long buried seeds would remain viable. He buried bottles w different seeds in a secret spot on Michigan State's campus.

Every 20 yrs, a small group scientists dig up the bottles & seeds continue to germinate 🌱 (My husband @DavidLowry is the one on the right).

The paper from their last dig is now out so this story is back in the news. https://www.yahoo.com/news/discovery-inside-unearthed-bottle-ve-103236780.html

‘Tis the season to remember that all of Santa’s reindeer are female.

You see, males drop their antlers after the Autumn mating season, so since the world’s most celebrated reindeer are always depicted with spectacular antlers, we must assume that Ol’ Saint Nick’s entire intrepid team - including Rudolph - are female.

Meanwhile over on the ex-bird site, giant doomsday accounts are peddling nonsense like this.

Part of what is funny/sad is how lazy these accounts are. The promoted video has a time stamp right at the bottom showing that it was taken a week ago!

The Sun develops magnetic holes like this all the time. It has moved on, and so have we. (Real Sun news at the link.)

British surveyor and geographer George Everest died in 1866.

Everest was largely responsible for surveying the meridian arc from the southernmost point of India north to Nepal, a distance of about 2,400 kilometres, a task that took from 1806 to 1841 to complete. In 1865, the Royal Geographical Society renamed Peak XV – at the time only recently identified as the world's highest peak – to Mount Everest in his honour. via @wikipedia

Russian mathematician and geometer Nikolai Lobachevsky was born in 1792.

He is known primarily for his work on hyperbolic geometry, otherwise known as Lobachevskian geometry, and also for his fundamental study on Dirichlet integrals, known as the Lobachevsky integral formula.

Another of his achievements was developing a method for the approximation of the roots of algebraic equations (Lobachevsky method). via @wikipedia

I've never stopped feeling angry about the NYT's story from last November which fearmongered heavily about puberty blockers and the supposed risks to bone health they might bring.

So it is with grim satisfaction that I can report on a new study, in JAMA Pediatricts, that suggests fears about bone density have been wildly overstated.

Earth is estimated to be 4.54 billion years old, +- 50 million years. This estimate is based on the analysis of Earth’s crust, its rocks, and those of the Moon, and several meteorites, using radiometric dating methods. Earth formed around 4.54 billion years ago, approximately one-third the age of the universe, by accretion from the solar nebula.

Human-like forms, or hominids, diverged from other primates somewhere between 2.5 and 4 million years ago. The earliest known hominid species is Sahelanthropus tchadensis, which lived about 7 million years ago. However, the modern human species, Homo sapiens, evolved much later, around 300,000 years ago. Homo sapiens is part of a larger group of human species called Homo, which also includes extinct relatives such as Neanderthals and Denisovans.

There are those who believe they can bring into existence what they imagine.
On the other hand, there are those who don't even believe other people exist: they think their mind is the one forming images and that others are part of their mind.
As for me, I am intelligent and I believe in God.
Water did not create itself.
Let me hear from atheists who think water created itself.
