Generating new knowledge typically starts with a study. Now, libraries struggle to afford them (cbc.ca) en

The rising costs university libraries are paying to access journals have implications far beyond the ivory tower. From new cancer treatments to debates about foreign policy, new information enters the public domain through academic studies. Now libraries are having trouble affording the subscriptions.

The First Room-Temperature Ambient-Pressure Superconductor (arxiv.org) en

For the first time in the world, we succeeded in synthesizing the room-temperature superconductor (T(C) >= 400K, 127C) working at ambient pressure with a modified lead-apatite (LK-99) structure. The superconductivity of LK-99 is proved with the Critical temperature (T(C)), Zero-resistivity, Critical current (I(C)), Critical...

Say goodbye to any sense of community that place had in the next year or two.

This place may have its bugs, but it’s definitely superior.

Currently utilizing it in washington state. One of the first. Here's the biggest part: you need to spend one hour everyday doing this. It's basically meditation because you can't have anything interrupt you or do something else. You can split that into two thirty minutes sessions but fuck as a single father Its been impossible to find the time.

You can but you're told not to because you have to focus on the music and the sensation of the electric tingles on your tongue. So no I think it would be hard to read during it. It requires full mindfulness to get the best gain. Additionally, you cannot listen to it before bed, or in bed since it might put you to sleep. It's very soothing. But basically, it's an hour of meditation daily.

Scientists are bearing the brunt of this, but it is very much everyone’s problem. The people being harassed are doing things we urgently need them to do. That includes things like warning us about about immediate dangers, telling us what precautions we need to take, and doing research that could lead to workarounds and solutions to the problems themselves.

We need to speak against this. We need to act against this. And we need to change the system to provide protections and remedies. Otherwise we are all going to suffer.

fiat_lux,

A bunch of the complaints sound like the same complaints I've heard from many companies. But it also sounds like a shit place to work, with some arrogantly poor leadership decisions.

Pretty predictable stuff from spez. If I were one of Reddit's seemingly innumerable VP's, I'd be questioning if my total compensation package is worth much anymore.

… Here?

Yes, exactly like here! But you know, let’s make it centralized and maybe closed-source, that’ll teach those corporate overlords! /s

abff08f4813c,

Exactly this. Looking at the top response it details it's hard due to a ton of costs like operating costs and hosting costs and stuff, but with federation these costs can be spread around so that it's more manageable for each individual instance (as content doesn't need to be viewed from the original instance but gets spread around).

@Bendersmember Content generation has slowed and from what I can tell, comment participation is way down. Right now, after going through and subscribing to a number of magazines, my kbin feed is more useful and active than reddit ever was, although the audience is clearly smaller (but seriously growing since last week). The quality of the content is better, and it's much easier to filter out the shitposting.

The clearest place to see content drought this is in /r/all - the top posts are all 3 - 15 hours old. Before the blackout, it would refresh in a matter of minutes, not hours.

Helvedeshunden,

The_Donald was not about political opinions. It was a hate farm that made neofascists out of people who came for the lulz. By all means let's have actual conservatives discuss politics as a counterpoint to more liberal views, but smack the fascists down - because it's the only way to truly have a tolerant society and civil discourse: Intolerance as politics must not be tolerated. If that basic rule is ignored, everything else fails.

See the paradox of intolerance.

I really like this interpretation of the Paradox of Intolerance:

The Paradox of Tolerance disappears if you look at tolerance, not as a moral standard, but as a social contract.
If someone does not abide by the contract, then they are not covered by it.
In other words: The intolerant are not abiding by the terms of the social contract of mutual tolerance. Since they have broken the terms of the contract, they are no longer covered by the contract, and their intolerance should NOT be tolerated.

LynnTheChaoticWitch,

You can block people and communities… I’m a trans woman; naziism and really just social conservatism works against me. I still think they should have a space to spout off, just as I should have a space to spout off about how irresponsible, bigoted and cruel their statements are. I also think there is nothing wrong with safe spaces; I mean look at raddle.me and on the opposite end Facebook and Twitter. Taking someone’s tounge doesn’t prove them wrong, only that you are afraid of what they have to say. The words of a fascist should be said and maybe repeated so they can be struck down by those who prefer love to hate.

Kichae,

Don't platform fascists. Don't play apologetics for platforming fascists. Don't tolerate people who platform fascists.

Stop treating fascism as a mere difference of opinion.

Kichae,

No, it's good for getting rid of antisocial shit heads who feel like they're entitled to an audience for their toxic or abusive ideas and beliefs.

Because that's exactly what it speaks to.

Now, if you want to argue with Karl, might I recommend getting a PhD in philosophy and starting from there, rather than whining on the internet?

Hyperreality,

"Can I come over to your house and shit in your hair?" said the pigeon.

"No thank you. I'd rather you do that somewhere else." said the man.

"Censorship! Triggered! Snowflake!" Said the pigeon. Then he shitted in the man's hair anyway.
