Why is everyone developing apps for Lemmy and not Kbin?

kbin lacks an API with an equivalent feature set. Ernest is aware of this and it's on the bug tracker. Any working apps for kbin are using site scraping as a temporary workaround. In layman's terms it means the app developer is doing a lot of extra work that will mostly get thrown away when the API rework is complete. Artemis is the only one currently doing this off the top of my head.

@atocci@kbin.social avatar

The developer of Pixelfed, @dansup, is working on a kbin app as well.

sgtlighttree,

Tbf you can see some kbin stuff from lemmy either through desktop or a mobile app, but Sync for Lemmy is planned to have kbin support too, but we'll see.

AlbertHockman,

I read somewhere on here that Kbin doesn't have an API available right now and that Artemis is making their own API through scraping. That'd play a big role if it's true. I also wouldn't be surprised if migration numbers were skewed towards Lemmy either.

@TimeSquirrel@kbin.social avatar

Scraping is hard on a server though. You gotta download the entire page and all its data instead of just the info/action you requested. That's one of the reasons other websites bother to make APIs, so bots and others DON'T start just scraping them.

Really happy to see that the dev is bringing Boost to Lemmy/Threadiverse. Losing Boost has been the saddest part of reddit shutting down for me

BoCanCan,

I was waiting for this announcement. So happy that he’s on board with us. A decade of using boost before, and I’ll use it for another when he releases boost for lemmy.

the_thunder_god, a RedditMigration en BaconReader's final release announcement
@the_thunder_god@kbin.social avatar

After I did my research on all the devs of the different Android and iOS apps...I discovered the app I had been using, BaconReader, was basically the only one backed by an Ad company (also somehow tied to Tmobile/Sprint). The rest of them are basically independent developers. So after learning that...not sorry to see it go. If there was some redemption arc by reddit I'd use another app. Good riddance.

edit: here's the fosstodon thread I posted about my research: https://fosstodon.org/@thundergod97/110554562902608839

edit2: I loved using BaconReader....I was a premium user....but this information drastically changed my opinion of it.

Maestro,
@Maestro@kbin.social avatar

Why? It was still a good app.

the_thunder_god,
@the_thunder_god@kbin.social avatar

Lack of a response to what was happening. I drew up this research in the middle of the protests...from them I saw nothing (expected something posted on their subreddit, I removed their app after finding nothing from them). It seemed like a lack of care. Because of that, this post by them seems disingenuous to me, it's in response to the adoring fans posting to their subreddit. How many of those people posting love in their subreddit know about who the owners of the app are. Put two and two together and you know this is who Spez was talking about when he said some were just not willing to talk. I asked the same question of everyone who was unwilling to talk....why. I found answers for some...some had their words misrepresented by Spez....some hadn't said anything that I found...such as BaconReader.

FarFarAway,

This kinda makes sense. When i first started using baconreader, i didn't see any adds. Then, after some update, ads started popping up, like alot of them...

Interesting

khelmr, a RedditMigration en Call to action - renewed protests starting on July 1st
@khelmr@kbin.social avatar

Reddit has already lost me as a user in the past month. I originally expected to switch using old reddit exclusively after July 1, but the blackout revealed to me just how bad reddit's content quality has gone since I first started using it after trying out lemmy and kbin. Reddit's response to the blackout and protests also showed me that they do not care about their community and that the quality will only go further downhill as the power users migrate away. Reddit was the only social media I used, and now kbin is now the only social media I use. There are still some subreddits I lurk in that have not seen activity here yet, so I still visit reddit once in a while but I only do so using RSS feed. I wish the remaining reddit protesters the best, but it appears to be a losing battle.

Cryst,

I havent been on there since the blackout.

verysoft, a RedditMigration en Call to action - renewed protests starting on July 1st

Perhaps they should make posts in their new kbin/fedi communties and then only allow links to them posts in their subreddits and disable commenting on reddit. People will then see the new platforms and be likely to sign-up to interact with it.

Or just let the fediverse grow organically, perhaps the masses are better off staying away, but if they are trying to protest reddit, they are doing it the wrong way.

They value your privacy.

That’s why they’ll sell it to the highest bidder. And the second-highest bidder. And anyone else that wants it.

“Each subreddit creates its own Community Points token, with a custom name and symbol.”

So based on the art in that panel: communities for a fidget spinner, pinwheel , and a brick…

Seems like par for the course.

Weighted polls? Something something Animal Farm.

TheRazorX, a RedditMigration en I just wanted to leave this here

Run weighted polls to make big decisions in your community, like getting input on rules changes or deciding how to distribute Points.

Unlike regular polls, these polls give a larger voice to people who have contributed more to the community. The more Community Points someone has earned, the more weight their vote carries

Am I the only one that thinks this is a horrible idea considering the creator to lurker ratio?

originalucifer,
@originalucifer@moist.catsweat.com avatar

i find it hilarious considering they used the same excuse for forcing sub policy change reversion; "only the active people voted, you cant just change the sub policy because of allll the lurkers"..

reddit executive lacks cohesive governance. just a complete shitshow
