/kbin Road to Release devlog series (kbin.social) en

From today, I'm starting a small series of daily devlogs where I'll be describing the changes being implemented before the official release of the first version of /kbin. As I mentioned earlier, I had some minor turbulence in my private life from which I'm slowly emerging. I have partially stabilized my life situation in various...

Cheers for the continual update mate, always good to see how the project evolves

The Reddit Protest Is Finally Over. Reddit Won. (gizmodo.com) en

The last major holdouts in the protest against Reddit’s API pricing relented, abandoning the so-called “John Oliver rules” which only allowed posts featuring the TV host. The article describes it as "the official end of the battle," which seems an overstatement to me, but it's the certainly the end of the initial phase....

Reddit was always going to rebound eventually, it's got a massive userbase and can pull through a fair number of people leaving. I'm pretty happy with the amount of free time I've won back since I've stopped doom scrolling Reddit.

Pretty keen to see how the fediverse improves over time.

AnonymousLlama,
@AnonymousLlama@kbin.social avatar

I'd also say the brand reputation has taken a pretty decent hit with their awful handling of the situation. With an upcoming IPO you think they would have handled it carefully but they just seemingly YOLO'd it

AnonymousLlama,
@AnonymousLlama@kbin.social avatar

Hopefully just a temporary issue but seeing how they've handled stuff over the past few months, it wouldn't surprise me if part of their GDPR download was busted

AnonymousLlama,
@AnonymousLlama@kbin.social avatar

Always a fun thing to watch, trying to guess what they do to further alienate their unpaid staff

AnonymousLlama,
@AnonymousLlama@kbin.social avatar

Never forgot what old mate Spez took from us. The least he deserves is a big portion of the 2023 places map dedicated to his shithouse handling of Reddit

AnonymousLlama,
@AnonymousLlama@kbin.social avatar

Wonder how long it'll be up for! Hopefully it lasts until the end and we get a nice big banner out of it

AnonymousLlama,
@AnonymousLlama@kbin.social avatar

I love it more and more. Great to see it

AnonymousLlama,
@AnonymousLlama@kbin.social avatar

Damn I missed it! Didn't get to see it 😵

AnonymousLlama,
@AnonymousLlama@kbin.social avatar

Always great to be about to look back at these things over the years and see how it's progressed. Be great to see if a majority of the 2023 place was filled with "fuck Spez", exactly what he deserves

AnonymousLlama,
@AnonymousLlama@kbin.social avatar

The only thing I'll be giving Reddit is my traffic, more than happy to lurk the comment but I definitely won't be posting, commenting, upvoting/downloading or helping admins by reporting spam and rule violations. None of that effort anymore

AnonymousLlama,
@AnonymousLlama@kbin.social avatar

I see what you did there

AnonymousLlama,
@AnonymousLlama@kbin.social avatar

2023 certainly does feel like the year where you're getting less for more.

AnonymousLlama,
@AnonymousLlama@kbin.social avatar

The thumbnails have been fixed on the dev instance. I'm hoping that one comes out soon

AnonymousLlama,
@AnonymousLlama@kbin.social avatar

There's a few things in the works to improve the moderating flow / processes, for now it's just easier to use 'more > report' and hopefully that should be enough for now.

AnonymousLlama,
@AnonymousLlama@kbin.social avatar

There's a few tickets floating around regarding the user flow for how blocking users actually works. This is probably one of those untested cases where you've blocked someone but you can see see them when they do X.

The blocking workflow is definitely something that needs some improvements, but I think right now everyone is focused on stability (especially with the influx of new people everyone's expecting)

AnonymousLlama,
@AnonymousLlama@kbin.social avatar

Cheers for the list. Great to keep an eye open for alternatives. What I'm looking for right now is a good GIT client for Ubuntu.

On windows I've got Sourecetree, it's free and got a really simple UI.

I've found a single program, SmartGit that looks decent but apparently it's just a trial version and they've got licenses. I haven't really found anything as a good substitute

AnonymousLlama,
@AnonymousLlama@kbin.social avatar

It's a shame to have to migrate away from a place when it was fundamentally damaged by terrible top-down decisions. 2023 really is the year of getting less for more.

AnonymousLlama,
@AnonymousLlama@kbin.social avatar

There's a discussion about storing the things you've clicked on either in your local browsers storage (or DB) so that next time you go to your list we can highlight them with CSS differently (like show it at 0.5 opacity so it's clear you've seen it)

That's still an active discussion, but there's nothing else settings wise right now that help you hide stuff you've already seen.

A fair number of people seem to be spilling out into Lemmy, kbin, squabbles and other places. Be keen to see how the growth accelerates over the next few weeks as people weigh up their options.

AnonymousLlama,
@AnonymousLlama@kbin.social avatar

From what I can see the upvote / downvote both work as you'd expect now (as in upvoting curates content). There was apparently a period of time where 'boost' was the upvote mechanic but that's been changed

AnonymousLlama,
@AnonymousLlama@kbin.social avatar

Yeah a few friends have spread out, reach looking into new replacements. Kbin got my attention since it's open source and PHP based, so it's something I can jump right into and fix up issues. Lots of people working on fixing up several parts of the site to make it even better

AnonymousLlama,
@AnonymousLlama@kbin.social avatar

It's a whole new system so it's going to take a while to get used to it. There's several things behind the scenes getting improved, lots of new UI improvements pending

AnonymousLlama,
@AnonymousLlama@kbin.social avatar

I remember recently they changed some of their NSFW language rules, people had the shits and 6 weeks later they changed them again. This one guy who makes summaries of r/amitheasshole changed how he says it to 'am I the butt hole'

It's silly crap like that which is the most annoying, trying to censor the most mundane swear words.

Hot take: 18 years of user contributions to reddit will serve as a base model for an AI that generates content and conversations. the reddit experience continues as a simulation, to harvest clicks, sales and ad revenue. (kbin.social) en

most of the time you'll be talking to a bot there without even realizing. they're gonna feed you products and ads interwoven into conversations, and the AI can be controlled so its output reflects corporate interests. advertisers are gonna be able to buy access and run campaigns. based on their input, the AI can generate...

Never underestimate the power of negative energy, plenty of people flock to also dump on things they don't like, it's a great way to drive engagement (albeit shitty engagement)

AnonymousLlama,
@AnonymousLlama@kbin.social avatar

Having "add new post" in the header on kbin it's definitely something that will trip up people coming from Reddit. You need to add a new "article" which isn't very intuitive

AnonymousLlama,
@AnonymousLlama@kbin.social avatar

In kbins case you actually have a responsive admin and can actually find devs on here working on new features and tweaks (hey there!)

Super happy with how kbin has been going so far

AnonymousLlama,
@AnonymousLlama@kbin.social avatar

Still sucks to leave a place you've invested so much time into, plenty of people have a decade worth of lurking, posting, upvoting etc. Not a great situation and I can understand people doing whatever they can to try and get a reasonable resolution

AnonymousLlama,
@AnonymousLlama@kbin.social avatar

The worse part is when you can't even call someone a cunt outside of r/Australia. They act like I've stolen their first born or something 😮

AnonymousLlama,
@AnonymousLlama@kbin.social avatar

Terrible mate, it sucks that you got the shit end of the stick. Reddit admins are putting the squeeze on heaps of mods, they're not interested in resolving any issues, just silencing opposition.

It's a shame that something you put that much time and effort in has all of a sudden vanished, hopefully you find a new home / community here.

AnonymousLlama,
@AnonymousLlama@kbin.social avatar

Also the people who say "well I'm not using third party apps so who cares anyway"

The thing they should care about is how reddit has handled this situation. Imagine what nonsense they'll come up with next if they're willing to turf away some of the oldest and most dedicated users
