This is why when a social media site gets past a certain size, the admin team and the moderation need to be clearly defined, and siloed from each other's core responsibilities, so the admin team focuses on running the site and the mod team focuses on making it sing.

Looks like the people actually moderating clearly had a handle on the situation. The admin was clearly overworked and didn't agree with the direction the community was taking, and made a quick decision that was poorly thought out.

The reason admins are admins is because they're good at running machines. You can turn a machine off if it's broken, and change how it runs with the flip of a switch.

A community requires a much different approach, and never, no matter how wise the decision, reacts well to being told how to act. It takes a different skill set to properly moderate and run a community than it does to run a server - in fact most admins I know make notoriously bad moderators (myself included, although I'm no longer an admin).

To be honest, the admin here is acting exactly like your stereotypical libertarian tech-bro computer guy who pays lip service to the left while pocketing the more palatable pieces of the philosophy of the right. I've worked with a lot of them in tech. LGBTQ+ is hard stretch for these guys in general - they'll declare gays have rights but won't march in Pride, use slurs when in like company, and generally see LGBTQ+ as a lifestyle choice and not an inescapable biological state of being.

They don't understand that it's not a switch you can flick on and off.

Just glad I'm on the Fediverse where this particular admin's meltdown doesn't matter too much, but I have a feeling Squabblr's fate is going to be the same as Voat (which was cool for about two weeks before the alt-right overran it).

e_t_,

My subscription was going to renew on July 3rd, but I let it expire. That seems like a wiser decision every day.

what I take from this, though, is that even with the anger against Reddit, there’s no talk of leaving in the comments on that post!

you hate the site and all of their changes so much and it’s only been getting worse… why do you stay? even the content is already worse, and even worse on the subs that have the new Reddit tipping system… why stay?

Edit: holy fuck no one told me it was a blockchain cryptoshit??? That’s even funnier 💀

Hopefully, lawns look boring at best. This would be a valuable change for insects.

Really you have to use third party tools for discovery. Very hard to discover on kbin outside of the big communities. But I like kbin implementation of the threadiverse the best

Tygr,

I was just going to say this. Holding on to the illusion of power as a major moderator is about to turn into a shitshow. Even Reddit themselves have been caught using chat bots to sway public opinion.

Reddit has decided to make every bad decision (favoring profits) possible, all at once.

"How Reddit crushed the biggest protest in its history - The Verge"

Meanwhile is still happening and there are more groups added to the by the day. even has a instance & members are really happy to be there. i suspect this is repeated everywhere in the Fediverse right now.

Honestly, I suspected they would never change the CEO's mind.

But they sure made themselves heard on the way out 😏

Well, had my content curated on Reddit and despised the recommendation stuff on the official app (that I never used lul). But now that I'm on a new platform, I want to have recommendations lol. The Random stuff on the sidebar's pretty neat, could've sworn Reddit has similar like 10 years ago.

Exilfranke,

People expect to switch platforms and immediately have the same experience there is mind-blowing.

We all spent 10ish years (!) tailoring our experience on Reddit. It's no surprise that you can't replicate all of that within 2 weeks.

It is bonkers how fast Lemmy & Kbin have grown.

The top posts from the bigger servers all have hundreds of comments.

The best bit is that comments are coming from a bunch of different servers too.

Reddit is toast.

While larger, more general communities are thriving on the Fediverse - I'm missing out on the niche communities (kbin.social) en

Gaming, news, tech, general literature. All of these are somewhat thriving, with a steady influx of posts and comments. At the same time, the userbase is sorely lacking for more niche communities. In my case it'd be stuff like poetry, yoga, religion, linguistics, meditation. Or many other communities I'd doubt they'd form a...

@aidan@kbin.social avatar

That’s exactly what I’m trying to do for all the communities I want. I’m starting them, making some placeholder rules, letting them attract a community, then I’m going to have the community vote on permanent rules, and then, once all of that is in place to keep the community stable, recruit mods to take over. At that point, it’ll be clear which users would make good mods (I hope)

@drumdonuttea@kbin.social avatar

I noticed there didn't exist a niche community that I'm passionate about so... I created it! It's like any other new platform, it just takes time.

MrGG,

Well good news, friend! Here is the kbin source code. Since it's so easy to do I look forward to seeing your pull request sometime today 😀

ernest,
@ernest@kbin.social avatar

I appreciate the concern, and it seems to me that kbin is no longer just one person ;) Currently, kbin is a team of wonderful people who handle development work, devops, project management, and more. Additionally, Piotr helps me with administering kbin.social. There will be significant changes here soon, things are happening quickly. But to be honest, I wasn't fully prepared for such substantial growth, and it will probably take some time before everything stabilizes. But... this is just the beginning ;) What's important is that the snowball starts rolling, regardless of whether kbin, Lemmy, or Mastodon gains the most users. We all win in this situation.

abff08f4813c,

shreddit does this - both the $15 shreddit.com and the free scripts available from github

shreddit does use the API tho, something to keep in mind.

FYI we are tracking GDPR request timelines: https://kbin.social/m/RedditMigration/t/50981/Reddit-Data-Retrieval-Request-timeline-thread

If this is how the admins choose to act, so fucking be it. I'll deltree my 12 year old account and never go back. As it stands, the fediverse is already my new home, and the users who decide to remain on reddit can explain to all the new users what the fuck went wrong.

Ernest actually reminds me of u/ljdawson, the dev behind the Sync app. He's responsive, takes criticism well, and seems to genuinely care about the platform he's created. Hard to go wrong with that.
